How to install cabinets

1. Use a level and a pencil to draw a perfectly parallel line across the wall about 3 inches up from the floor. Measure down from this line to the floor to find the floor's high point (if it has one), and mark a line at that point. From there, measure up 34 1/2 inches and draw a level line across the wall to designate the top of the base cabinets.

2. From the 34 1/2-inch line, measure up another 19 1/2 inches and mark a level line across the wall to indicate the bottom of the wall cabinets. Lightly mark the cabinets' dimensions and placement on the wall to double-check your layout.

3. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs, then, with a pencil, mark their locations above and at least 6 inches below the mark you've made for the bottom of the wall cabinets. Draw straight vertical lines between the top and bottom marks to indicate the center of the studs.

4. Screw a temporary 1-by-3 support rail to the wall, aligning the top edge of the rail with the line for the bottom edge of the wall cabinets. Attach it by driving three or four 2-inch screws through the rail into the wall studs.

5. Install the corner wall cabinet first, with a helper. Drill pilot holes through the sturdy cabinet back or its support rail and into wall studs. Screw the cabinet to the wall using two screws that are long enough to penetrate the studs by at least 1 1/2 inches, then check the top for level and the front edge for plumb. To correct the position, back off the screws, tap shims behind the cabinet at stud locations, then drive the screws home and add several more into each stud for secure attachment.

6. Install the adjacent cabinets. As you install each one, secure it to its neighbor with a clamp and check it for plumb. On faceframe cabinets, it's easiest to drill two 1/8-inch pilot holes through the sides of the faceframe and use screws. With frameless cabinets, drill bolt holes through shelf-peg holes, then bolt the two together. Be sure not to fasten through shelf-peg holes that you will need for shelves.

7. After all the wall cabinets are in place, install the corner or end base cabinet. If necessary, use shims to level it and raise it up to the high point of the floor, so its upper edge aligns with the line on the wall. Be sure it is level from front to back and from side to side, then screw it to the wall studs.

8. To turn a corner with base cabinets, push the adjoining cabinet in place and clamp the two units together. Add a filler strip if needed to allow doors and drawers clearance. If necessary, tap shims under the cabinet and behind it to adjust for plumb and level.

9. Drive screws through the cabinet back (and shims) into the wall studs. Trim any excess material from the shims with a sharp chisel or knife. Continue to add adjoining cabinets in this manner, joining them as you did the wall cabinets in step 6.

New Kitchen Cabinet Installation Guide

New cabinets can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of a kitchen. Although installing kitchen cabinets does not require professional skills, it does take an eye for precision. In order for cabinets to work properly and look right, they must be installed level, plumb, and flush with each other.

Plan to put in cabinets after rough wiring and plumbing are installed but before you install finish flooring. This way, you won't use more flooring material than necessary and you won't be in danger of damaging new floors. Install wall-mounted cabinets first so the base cabinets won't be in your way as you work.

If your cabinets don't arrive assembled, put them together according to the manufacturer's directions--but remove (or don't install) doors, shelves, and drawers. If you remove these parts, label them so you will know where they go.

The wall behind the cabinets should be smooth, level, and clean. Make sure it's flat by placing a long straightedge against it. Mark any bumpy or bulging areas. During installation, tap wood shims--short pieces of wood shingles--beneath or behind the cabinets to make slight adjustments. If the irregularities are significant, you can compensate for them by using a scribe rail.

Upper cabinets are extremely heavy when they're loaded with canned foods or dinnerware, so they must be fastened very securely to wall studs. Screw through a strong part of the cabinet--most have a support rail that runs across the back for this. For each cabinet, at least three screws should penetrate the wall studs by at least 1 1/2 inches.

It is particularly important to install the first wall and base cabinets level and plumb, both from side to side and from front to back, because each additional cabinet will be aligned with the first ones.

Taking out your old cabinets

If your old cabinets are going to a new home (a garage, laundry room, cabin or yard sale), be careful when removing them. Your ultimate goal is to strip the room down to a blank shell. At this point, it’s a good idea to set out the new cabinets to verify the inventory and determine a plan of attack.

The project will be more complicated if your plan involves relocating a sink or an appliance that relies on plumbing or utility hookups. If you’re simply replacing a cabinet that houses a sink, just disconnect the sink’s plumbing and remove the existing base unit.

When it comes to installation, even professionals agree that there is more than one correct approach. For some expert instruction, we spent a day with installer Brian McNallan and the crew of M C Squared. We watched them install cabinets in a remodeled kitchen, asked questions and photographed the steps so we could show you how it’s done.

Every kitchen has its own design that dictates the order in which we install cabinets,” says Brian. Typically the sink is centered under a window, which determines positioning of the units on either side. If a corner cabinet is in the plan, it too becomes a fixed starting place.

As far as which to install first, we recommend starting with the wall cabinets. That way, you won’t have to reach across the lower cabinets or risk damaging them. Working with an assistant, fasten to the wall a temporary ledger board on which to rest the back of the cabinet, or use a jack system, such as the T-Jaks (model TJ-104) that Brian used (photo, bottom left, p. 31). If you’re working alone, the Gillift by Telpro (available at equipment-rental stores) enables one person to maneuver, lift and support a cabinet for fastening.

On the other hand, if you begin with the base cabinets, you can use them to support a shorter jack for hoisting the wall cabinets. But be sure to protect the base units with heavy moving blankets or padding while working above them.

Installing Cabinets

To reduce weight and improve maneuverability, remove drawers and doors, labeling the parts with painter’s tape. If doors are too complicated to remove from the cases, tape heavy cardboard over their faces to prevent marring. For cabinets with glass-front doors, you may leave the door frames in place and remove only the glass panels.

Rather than installing each unit independently, Brian joins two or more components together before mounting them to the wall. With the wall units lying on their backs on the floor or another level surface, he drives three screws through the adjacent face frames of neighboring cabinets. Base units are joined together while standing upright. If your working surface is not perfectly even, support low spots with shims as you join two units together, making sure the adjacent ends and faces are flush with each other. When possible, drive screws into the stile on the hinge side of the cabinet, where the screw heads will be less visible. Choose the appropriate screw length for the size of each connection (stile widths may vary), making sure the screw is as long as possible but at least 1/4 in. shy of going through the stile when countersunk.

To join cabinets, first drill three clearance holes that are slightly larger than a screw (about 3/16 in.) from the outside of the frame through the width of the stile (top, center and bottom). If the hole is too small, the screw may not draw the cabinets together. At the top, drill at a slight downward angle so you can more easily drive the screw from the inside with a drill/driver.

From the inside of the cabinet, counterbore so the screwhead will be flush with the wood.

Clamp the units together or hold them firmly together. Insert a screw and drive it partially in. Check that both frame faces are flush, and adjust if needed by tapping with a soft-face mallet. Keep checking alignment as you drive the two remaining screws. (Inset: An alternate method is to use Pony Cabinet Claws (see SOURCES) to hold the frames together while you predrill and fasten.)

In addition to these general recommendations, consider the following tips for installing specific types of cabinets:

Wall units

To hang a grouping of two or more components, provide additional stability by driving a screw through the top lips of both cases near the backs of the units. This adds support for lifting and positioning multiple units. If you need to place fasteners from the inside of cabinets that have glass fronts, be careful to place them so the screw heads are as inconspicuous as possible.

Support the wall units with T-Jaks (see SOURCES) because they’re more reliable than using a ledger board, which levels the cabinets along the back edge only. To position, use the predrawn line as a guide for the bottom and a plumb line marked for one end of the cabinet.

Tack the unit to the wall with one screw; then make any needed adjustments. Check that the face is plumb, and if necessary, add shims behind the cabinet in areas where you’ll attach it to the wall.

Attach cabinets that have glass doors to the wall through the bottom and top lip rather than through the inside, where screws may be more visible. For all cabinets, but especially upper units, use flathead wood screws rather than drywall screws, which can be brittle.

Base units

Floors and walls are rarely plumb and level, so expect to add shims to compensate for structural imperfections. Level base cabinets side-to-side and front-to-back by inserting cedar shims under the frame of the unit, being sure to support spaces under joints where two units come together. With base units that form a corner, it’s especially important that the tops and fronts be level and flush to properly support the countertop. You may need to use shims behind the cabinet units to ensure that the corners are square and that the top surfaces are level. After installation, use a utility knife to score the parts of shims that protrude beyond the cabinet and snap off the excess.

Insert shims as needed to level cabinets along the front and back edges. Be sure all units are supported at their corners.

Check for level along the front face and from front to back, especially when working on a section that meets another unit in a corner.

Attach base units to the wall with 2-1/2-in. self-tapping flathead wood screws, driving through the nailing strip and into studs. In this case, the stud fell behind a corner block.

Sink cabinets

Drain pipes and supply lines can be reminiscent of a Chinese puzzle when you try to maneuver the sink base into position. It’s easier to win the game if you have accurately measured and cut openings in the cabinet.

To cut holes that look clean and splinter-free, start by making careful measurements and marking hole locations on the outside surface (the back and bottom of the cabinet); then drill pilot holes in the centers. Next, cut from the cabinet’s inside surface with a hole saw so splintering doesn’t mar the interior.

For the drain pipe, use the same method to cut a second hole below the first one; then link the two by cutting two lines between them with a circular saw or jigsaw from the outside of the cabinet, creating an oval opening. (Remember that a circular saw blade pulls up, causing the surface that is facing you to chip.) This elongated hole lets you slide the cabinet down along the drain rough-in while positioning the unit over the two supply lines (photo, top right).

Odds and Endings

Corner cabinets with curved backs (above left) are made for fitting through 36-in. doorways. However, unlike corner units made with mitered backs, they need extra ledger boards attached in the corner to support the countertop.

Filler strips (above center) are ripped to the required width and attached to the face frame of neighboring cabinets in the same way you connect two units, as shown above.

To mark locations of pipes (above right), measure horizontal distances along the wall from the edge of the neighboring unit. For easier transfer of dimensions, keep the sink base close to the wall as you measure and mark.

Finishing

Some cabinet manufacturers sell finished toe-kick boards in 8-ft. lengths, which you cut to fit. You can also cut 1/4-in. plywood to size and finish it to match the cabinets. To attach the toe kick, apply silicone adhesive caulk and secure the piece with finish nails. Miter the corners and touch up the ends with stain or putty sticks to match the finish.

For a seamless look, apply matching Minwax Color Putty to the joints between components and to the nail holes. Simply rub the putty in with your finger and buff the area with a soft cloth.

You can use a variety of techniques to mask any gaps along the wall where the cabinet ends are visible. Brian applies a bead of paintable caulk at wall/cabinet joints. Another easy method is to add a strip of scribe molding along the edge where the wall meets the cabinet. After these finishing touches, your new cabinets will appear to be an original built-in feature of the room — unless you brag, visitors will never know you added them yourself.

Crowning Touch - Adding crown molding to your cabinets

For a furniture-quality look, enhance cabinets with crown molding (often available in prefinished 8-ft. lengths). A continuous crown adds style and makes a bank of cabinets look like a single unit. But reveals that protrude beyond the sides of cabinets create a challenge. You could attach the crown right over the lip and fill in the resulting gap with matching putty, but that throws off the angle of your miter cuts and leaves more gaps to fill. Hanging cabinets, as well as base cabinets, must be anchored to the studs in the kitchen walls. For this reason, your first step is to determine where all the studs are in the walls. Use a stud finder or small drill bit to locate the studs. Once you find the first one, the others should be spaced 16" apart. Make sure you mark both edges of the stud.

2. Next you need to determine the bottom reference line for the hanging cabinets. Generally you will want at least 18" to 20" in between the bottom of the hanging cabinets and the countertop below. This provides adequate room for cooking and appliances. Based on this dimension, determine the height of the bottom reference line and use a level to mark it along the wall.

3. Take the 1" x 3" strips of wood and line up the top of the board with the reference line. Screw the strips into the wall studs with 2-1/2" screws. This will serve as a ledge for resting the cabinets on while you install them. You will remove these boards once the cabinets are secured to the walls.

4. Install the first cabinet section in a corner by resting it on the 1"x 3" strip of wood. Drill pilot holes in the back frame and ledger of the cabinet. Make sure the pilot holes line up with the studs in the wall. Using 2-1/2" screws, secure the cabinet to the wall with a top and bottom screw for each stud that the cabinet spans. Do not completely tighten the cabinet in place. You still need to shim it into position.

5. Using wood shims, make sure the face and side of the cabinet are plumb. Once it is in the proper position, tighten all the screws.

6. Using a chisel or utility knife, cut off any protruding shims.

7. Put the next cabinet in place. Again, you need to shim it into position and make sure it is plumb. Also, make sure the faces of the two cabinets are flush with each other. Using clamps, pull the two adjacent cabinet frames together. Using long screws, secure the cabinets together.

8. In some cases, you may need to install a filler strip in between a cabinet and a wall. Use the same technique you used to secure two cabinet sections together. Clamp the filler strip in place and use long screws to fasten it in place.

9. To hide gaps in between the cabinets and the walls, tack a piece of molding in place. Finish it to match the cabinets.

10. If not installed already, the final step is to install the cabinet doors and the pulls (knobs and handles). Usually the holes are pre-drilled and ready to go.

1. Unpack and inspect cabinets: It is important to double check your order before you begin assembling or installing the cabinets, to make sure the dimensions match your working drawing and your existing kitchen space.

2. Lay out cabinet positions: Use a pencil, a level and a tape measure to lay out the exact positions of your cabinets and mark these dimensions on the wall. First you will install the upper cabinets but you need to measure from the floor to locate the correct position. The base cabinet will sit on the floor and come up to a height that is typically about 34 1/2 inches. On top of that goes the counter top, which is a thickness of an inch and a half, and then 18 inches from the top of the counter top, is typically the bottom of the wall cabinet. In this case, 54 inches total. Mark off 54 inches, or whatever your own calculation is, and draw a level line. Next, tack a piece of 1 X 4 on the wall along that level line. This will provide you with temporary support for the wall cabinets as you put them up. Leave the nail heads slightly extended so they will be easier to pull out when you remove the ledger.

3. Assemble overhead cabinets: First install wooden dowels, which will strengthen the cabinet and help position the parts for assembly. Apply wood glue to pre-drilled holes and spread it around with a nail to thoroughly coat the surfaces. Then insert the dowels and gently tap them into place with a hammer.

These cabinets were held together with a knock down fasting system. This system works with what is called a cam and a post. The post is inserted inside the cam. As the cam is rotated, the post is pulled up, pulling the pieces of the cabinet snugly together. The post fits very snugly in the hole so it is helpful to use a hammer to press the post down firmly and tap it once for good measure. As you insert the cams, make sure that the opening of the cam is lined up with the pre-drilled hole on the edge of the panel. Once the hardware is in place, start putting the cabinet pieces together.

Fit the cams directly over the posts then gently turn them to lock the pieces in place. Once three sides are constructed, slip the cabinet back into the grooves located in the sides and bottom. Then you can complete the cabinet with the top panel. The pieces fit snuggly, so a plastic mallet is used to gently tap things into place. A quarter turn of the cams will pull the panels tightly together and hold everything in place. Next, attach the hinges. There are pre-drilled holes for each piece, which makes measuring unnecessary. Assembly is as easy as turning a few screws.

4. Hang overhead cabinets: Instead of putting each cabinet up individually, it is better to attach them together into a sub-assembly. The easiest way to do this is to lay the cabinets on their backs on a flat surface. Then check to make sure that the cabinet faces are flush to each other. If one cabinet is lower than another, it will create a ridge between the two. A way to even them up is to use a putty knife like a shim by slipping it underneath the cabinet. The further you push it in, the higher it will raise the cabinet until both surfaces are flush.

Secure the even surfaces together with clamps and then attach the cabinets permanently with wood screws. Before the cabinets can be hung, the wall studs need to be located and marked. Use an electronic stud finder to simplify the job.

On the backside of the cabinets you will find a hanging strip, which is a ¾ inch piece of wood. The screws have to go through this strip because the back of the cabinet is otherwise too thin. Measure and then transfer the stud locations to the inside of the cabinets along the hanging strip. Now you know exactly where to drill pilot holes and attach the screws. Set the bottom edge of the cabinet onto the top of the ledger strip you attached to the wall earlier, then attach the cabinets to the wall in the locations you have marked. Remove the ledger strip and reuse it on the other side.

5. Assemble base cabinets : Assemble the base cabinets as described above. It is likely that some of the base cabinets will have drawers. For these, you will have to install drawer glides before the cabinets are put together. The glide system for these cabinets has two components. The first goes on the inside of cabinet top piece before the cabinet is assembled. The second is mounted on the bottom end of the drawer. Again, the holes are pre-drilled so measuring is not necessary.

6. Install base cabinets:

Use a pry bar to gently remove the baseboards so the new cabinets will be positioned right up against the wall. The first base cabinet Ron installed was the sink base. They chose to center this cabinet underneath the window. Use a jigsaw to cut holes for the water supply lines and the drain on the lower deck of the sink cabinet.

Make sure the cabinet is level before you attach it to the wall studs. If the cabinet is not level, you will need to raise it up on the low side by sliding a tapered shim covered with wood glue underneath. Remove the excess shim by first scoring it with a utility knife and then breaking away the part that sticks out from under the cabinet. Once leveled and flush, again clamp the pieces as you did with the overhead cabinets and then attach the cabinet pieces together with wood screws.

Next, you will need to attach short pieces of wood known as cleats to the top edge of the cabinets with screws. These cleats will be used to attach the countertops to the base cabinets.

7. Install sink and countertop:

It is much easier to install the sink and plumbing hardware into the countertop before it is dropped into place and attached to the top of the cabinets. After you have done so, set the countertop into place. From underneath, screw through the cleats and into the bottom of the countertop. Attach the cabinet doors as described above and slide drawers into place.

8. Finishing touches:

Nail the toe kick onto the front of the cabinets, replace the baseboards, and slide the appliances into place, making sure not to scratch the floor or pull your back.

Measure the height of the base cabinets. Most standard cabinets are 34-1/2" high. Add 1-1/2" for a standard countertop and 18" for a standard back splash. The total measurement should be 54" from the floor. This is where the upper cabinets will be positioned. If your floor is not level, be sure to measure from the highest point along the wall.

Draw a horizontal line across the wall at this point which will serve as a guide for hanging the cabinets. Be sure to use a level to assure this line will be true horizontal.

Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs (figure A). The wall studs are crucial to properly support the weight of the cabinets. Note: Pay careful attention to the position of all electrical wiring and plumbing.

Next, secure a ledger board to the wall at the studs (figure B) to temporarily support the weight of the cabinets during the installation. Be sure the doors and hardware are removed from the cabinets to make them lighter and easier to install.

Attach as many cabinets together as you can safely lift and install on the ledger board -- usually two Use clamps to fix the stiles (the vertical pieces on the face of the cabinet frames) of the cabinets together and check for plumb, making sure the fronts of the cabinets are flush.

Next, pre-dill and secure the two cabinets together at the stile with the screws (figure C). Affix one screw on the top and bottom in the front and back where the two cabinets meet.

Lift the cabinets onto the ledger board and check for plumb and level (figure D). Shim the cabinets if necessary.

Once you have shimmed for plumb and level, secure the cabinets into the wall at the studs. Be sure to pre-drill and affix the screws through the thicker framing piece along the top of the cabinets.

Check for plumb and level while you’re securing the cabinets. Repeat this process for all of the wall cabinets. If a gap exists between wall and last cabinet, use a filler bar to enclose the gap (usually provided by the manufacturer). Before securing the last cabinet, measure, mark, cut and secure this piece to the side of the last cabinet.

Attach the doors and hardware after all of your cabinets are hung. Remove the ledger board when you are finished installing the wall cabinets.

Base Cabinet Installation

If the floor isn't level, find the highest point in the floor along the wall where the cabinets will be installed. It’s best to try to start the base cabinet installation as close to this high point as possible -- it's easier to shim under the cabinets on the lower spots to make them level with this first one, rather than starting on a low point and having to trim the bottoms of the cabinets while working "uphill".

Measure base cabinets and use the pencil and level to mark a level line on the wall from the high point in the floor to the cabinet height. Be sure to use a level to assure this line will be true horizontal. This is the guide to be followed for installation.

Dry-fit your first cabinet into place and check for level across the top. If needed, shim until level.

Now, pre-drill through the top framing piece into the wall studs (figure E) and secure the cabinet into place with screws. Re-check level after securing the cabinet.

Repeat this process until all of the base cabinets are installed. Attach the doors and hardware after all of your cabinets are in place.

Removing the Old Vanity

Good Idea: If your vanity is unfinished, finish it before installing.

Wear safety glasses and gloves when removing your old vanity.

Disconnect the plumbing.

Remove the countertop sink.

Most cabinets are screwed into wall studs. Remove the screws and slide the old cabinet out.

Preparation

Preparation is the key to any project and installing a vanity is no different. Always wear safety glasses when working with power tools.

Mark the height and sides

Measure the available space for your vanity before purchasing.

Measure the vanity height and width.

Measure and mark the height of the vanity from the floor in three different locations. Use the highest mark and draw the width of your vanity on the wall. Draw the left and right sides of the vanity on the wall. Make sure the lines are plumb and level. You should now have an outline of the vanity.. Locate at least one stud in the area outlined for your vanity.

Measure the location of the pipes and mark them on the back of the vanity.

Cut pipe holes in the vanity back. Make sure there is enough room for each pipe.

Installation

Remove vanity doors before installing to avoid damage.

Carefully slide the cabinet into place. Check to see if the vanity is level from side to side and front to back.

If it isn't level, put a wooden shim under the vanity to level it. Check to see if it's plumb and square.

Once the vanity is level, fasten it to the wall stud(s) through the nailer (piece of wood running across the back of the cabinet) using washers and 3" wood screws.

Use a chisel and hammer to cut off the edges of the shims. Be careful no to damage your floor.

Depending on how high the shims are, moulding may be needed on the bottom of the cabinet. Attach moulding using finishing nails.

Reattach the vanity doors.

Place a bead of latex caulk along the top edge all the way around the vanity.

Set the countertop in place on top of the vanity. Press the countertop down and allow the caulk to completely dry.

Install the sink and fixtures.
